Dressage

Dressage (a French term meaning "training") is a path and destination of competitive horse training, with competitions held at all levels from amateur to the Olympics. Its fundamental purpose is to develop, through standardized progressive training methods, a horse's natural athletic ability and willingness to perform, thereby maximizing its potential as a riding horse. At the peak of a dressage horse's gymnastic development, it can smoothly respond to a skilled rider's minimal aids by performing the requested movement while remaining relaxed and appearing effortless. Dressage is occasionally referred to as "Horse Ballet." Although the discipline has its roots in classical Greek horsemanship, mainly through the influence of Xenophon, dressage was first recognized as an important equestrian pursuit during the Renaissance in Western Europe. The great European riding masters of that period developed a sequential training system that has changed little since then and classical dressage is still considered the basis of trained modern dressage.

Early European aristocrats displayed their horses' training in equestrian pageants, but in modern dressage competition, successful training at the various levels is demonstrated through the performance of "tests," or prescribed series of movements within a standard arena. Judges evaluate each movement on the basis of an objective standard appropriate to the level of the test and assign each movement a score from zero to ten - zero being "not executed" and ten being "excellent." A score of nine (or "very good") is considered a particularly high mark, while a competitor achieving all sixes (or 60% overall) should be considering moving on to the next level.

We trotted for the first time yesterday!! PW was fantastic! With Raymundo at the controls he led us down the long side 3 times for a very relaxed and obedient trot! PW is really being a good girl, and loves the attention. Steering and stopping aids are still touch and go, but she is learning!
Thank you so much to Alyson Miller.............. who bought me a fantastic helmet from Euro American saddlery over the weekend at Centerline Events CDI. Now I have a proper helmet to wear while breaking in my baby! THANK YOU ALYSON!!

So PW is just doing fantastic I am just so happy with her. And...............having time for her is making the whole experience so much more gratifying. Yesterday there was excitement at the farm, a trailer in lesson loading and leaving and her best buddy Graci is back. These things created some distractions during our lesson. But, taking our time and letting her settle into her nerves and she particpated in our lesson and was perfect. She is such a good girl. It was in my mind not to get on her yesterday just because she was feeling so distracted but, we kept to our routine and she settled right in and in the end Raymundo led us around the whole arena with out a problem. She is also getting so nicely muscled and looks beautiful on the lunge.
Yes! Graci is back, my 6 year old oldenburg mare by Glorioso Noir. She is a big girl, and I was thinking of selling her because she is too big for me. But, we will ride her for a couple of days and see how it goes. Yesterday we started to get to know each other and I have to say for how big she is she is light and comfortable to ride. We will see.

PW is making wonderful progress! Friday I got all the way on and Raymundo led us down the long side! She is still not sure what to make of it all! She loves the attention and is really a good girl. She is alert and smart, does not miss a thing! But, she also loves to be engaged and wants to please. I am looking forward to training her from the saddle. It is so much fun to have time for a her and have a quality young horse that benefits from everyday we spend with her!

A big day for PW! We have been lunging beautifully with saddle and side reins on the bit! When we added the bouncing stirrups.............PW was quite sensitive to these and it has taken a couple of days to become relaxed. But today she was perfect! Lovely trot and canter in complete relaxation and looking for the bit! So we took the next big leap. I have been getting her used to me bouncing in the stirrup and lying over her back this week. Today Raymundo walked her forward while I was lying over the saddle! She was a bit shocked with my weight I think! But perfect!
2 weeks until our Hannoverian inspection! We are ready, she looks totally fit and beautiful with Raymundo's grooming.

PW is learning so many new things, and she is doing great. Since coming to Massachusetts she is lunging in the indoor perfectly. She learned in Florida about the surcingle, but yesterday she wore a saddle for the first time. She was very grown up about it! She is moving great on the lunge. She was definitly wondering what that funny feeling was, but never got upset or tried to get rid of it, I am happy about that! I hope to have a video up soon.

Here she is, PW going to school! She is doing great! lunging lessons are going well and yesterday she wore her surcingle for the first time. She wanted to know what that is all about, but took it in stride. She is always looking for affection and that is not hard when she is so cute!
Phil Silva has agreed to take her to her Hanoverian inspection in July, so that will be great!
Getting ready for our journey home. We will leave with the horses June 1. Lots of packing to do...........................

PW

Pikksie Wish is continuing her lessons and really starting to enjoy them! She is very clever and likes to please. As long as we do not cause sensory overload she is 100% willing and trying to get an A+ on every lesson. She is wearing her cute little bridle, not completely sure what to do with the bit, but she is accepting the idea! Her work in hand lessons are going very well and her trot is looking quite fancy. Raymundo is very patient with her and she is giving him all of her attention during the lessons. We are hoping to do some breed shows in the summer, I think she will do quite well! Also will take her to her Hanoverian Inspection in July.

PW

Yesterday was Pikksi Wish's first lesson! Pikksie Wish was purchased from Horses Unlimited as a weanling in 2007. She is by their stallion Pik L and out of a Wolkenstein 2 mare. She spent last winter with us and in Florida and then went to Nancy Sharpless beautiful farm in North Carolina to grow up on the hills. Last week she arrived back in Florida as a 3 year old! and we will begin to break her in. Yesterday April 9 was her first lesson and I am not sure she was a fan. She is still learning about the cross ties, but because she is shedding so much it is not hard for to figure out she needs to stand to get this nice brushing. The bridle was not as much fun for her, but she handled it. I do not think she loved the bit in her mouth but by the end of the lesson she was relaxing. We went to the arena for our first lunge and without some assistance this process was not going anywhere, so Raymundo helped to walk her around the lunging circle and they even did a couple of rounds of trot.
From this point of view she was looking very beautiful. She has very good hind legs and a very elastic gait. I am excited to see what she will grow into.
